Current Projects of the Friends of Arrow Rock

The Friends of Arrow Rock are in the midst of three projects: Original exhibits of 1974 have now been removed to make way for new exhibits coming in 2002.

1. The Sappington Museum has received exterior painting and a heating and cooling system in 2001 making ready for remodeling the interior to receive a full set of new exhibits in 2002. We have been planning for this project since 1998.

Two wells are dug for the geothermal heating & cooling system installed at the Black Masonic Lodge Hall. Location of the wells were coordinated with archaeologist Tim Baumann's work on the site.

2. Since receiving the gift of the Black Lodge in 1996, the exterior of the building has been stabilized and restored. In 2001, archaeology was completed under the building and a heating and cooling system installed. We also received a cooperative grant with the Black World History Museum in St. Louis for the planning of an exhibit on Arrow Rock's African American History. The exhibit will be housed in the downstairs of the Lodge Hall.

A new wood shingle roof & back porch was replaced in 2001 at the Lawless house.

3. Funded by a gift from Life Member Gladys Thomas, descendant of Burton and D. Lawless, the Friends are restoring the circa 1903 Lawless House. Owned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Friends have a long-term lease on the property and will restore the home as a museum house representing life in Arrow Rock at the turn of the 20th century. In 2001, the house was stabilized receiving new foundations, sills, roof, chimneys, and back porch.
